RESUMO

Background/purpose: Oral mucosal patches striae diseases (OMPSD) represent an important category of oral mucosal disease, most of which may have malignant potential (OMPSD-MP). The differential diagnosis is challenging due to overlap of their clinical and pathological features. Materials and methods: 116 OMPSD-MP patients were included in this cross-sectional study from November 2019 to February 2021, including oral lichen planus (OLP), oral lichenoid lesions (OLL), discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE), oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) and oral leukoplakia (OLK). The general information, clinical manifestation, histopathological and direct immunofluorescence (DIF) features were statistically analyzed and compared. Results: OLP was the major type of OMPSD-MP (64.7%), followed by OLL (25.0%), OLK (6.0%), DLE (2.6%) and OSF (1.7%), which were pooled as non-OLP group for further assessment. They shared many clinical and histological features in common. The rate of clinical-pathological diagnosis concordance was 73.5% for OLP, and 76.7% for total OMPSD-MP. DIF positive rate was significantly higher in OLP group than non-OLP group (76.0% vs. 41.5%, P < 0.001), in which the deposition of fibrinogen (Fib) and IgM were most frequently found. Conclusion: A significant overlap in clinical and histopathological features of OMPSD-MP was found, while DIF could be useful in differential diagnosis. Fib and IgM might be important immunopathological factors in OLP, which need further exploration.

RESUMO

UV/peroxymonosulfate (UV/PMS) advanced oxidation process has attracted significant attention for removal of micropollutants in water. However, during practical water treatment applications, the PMS treatment must be performed before the UV treatment to achieve full contact. In this study, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was selected as the target micropollutant. Four different operational approaches, including UV alone, PMS alone, simultaneous UV/PMS and sequential PMS-UV, were compared for their differences in SMX removal and disinfection by-product (DBP) formation potentials during chlorine-driven disinfection. Among the four approaches, UV/PMS and PMS-UV achieved over 90% removal efficiencies for SMX without substantial differences. For raw water, the trichloronitromethane (TCNM) formation potential after treatment with PMS-UV was lower than that after UV/PMS treatment. The time interval over which the PMS-UV process was conducted had little effect on the final removal efficiency for SMX. However, a brief (5 min) pre-PMS treatment significantly reduced the TCNM formation potential and the genotoxicity from DBPs. The formation risk for TCNM during chlorination increased markedly with increasing PMS dosages, and the appropriate dosage under these experimental conditions was suggested to be 0.5-1.0 mmol/L. Under alkaline conditions, PMS-UV treatment can enhance SMX degradation as well as dramatically reduced the formation potentials for haloketones, haloacetonitriles and halonitromethanes. This study suggests that proper optimization of UV/PMS processes can remove SMX and reduce its DBP formation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory lesion of oral mucosal, and its pathogenesis involves immune cell-mediated aberrances. However, the findings conflict with each other. This research aimed to comprehensively detect the salivary cytokine profile of patients with OLP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cohort included 60 OLP patients (30 reticular and 30 erosive), and 30 healthy controls, matched in age and sex. Human Cytokine/Chemokine Magnetic Bead Panel Kit (HCYTMAG-60K-PX41) was used to detect salivary inflammation-related cytokines. Rank sum test, group t-test, and ANOVA were used for data analysis in different groups. Moreover, Spearman's rank correlation analysis was used to analyze the correlation between salivary cytokine levels and OLP lesion severity. RESULTS: The levels of TNF-α, G-GSF, IL-1α, IL-1ß and IL-8 were statistically significant higher in both erosive and reticular OLP patients than in the healthy group, while the IL-13 level was significantly lower. Particularly, the salivary TNF-α, GM-CSF, MIP-1α, MIP-1ß, IL-1ß, IL-6 and IL-8 levels were higher in erosive OLP group than other groups. Spearman's rank correlation analysis revealed that the salivary TNF-α, GM-CSF, MIP-1α, MIP-1ß, IL-1ß and IL-6 levels were positively correlated with OLP lesion severity. CONCLUSION: Imbalance of the Th1/Th2-mediated immune response contributes to OLP. Certain salivary cytokines, such as MIP-1α, MIP-1ß, GM-CSF, and IL-6, are positively correlated with OLP severity, and they have a high potential as biomarkers to diagnose and predict OLP prognosis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To search new clues to reveal the action mechanism of inhaled anesthetics. METHODS: Three kinds of Drosophila melanogaster were used as studied models: the wild type strain (H), the sevoflurane-sensitive strain (S), and the sevoflurane-resistant strain (R). Differential display reverse transcriptional-polymerase chain reaction method was performed to examine the differentially expressed fragments between Drosophila induced with and without sevoflurane. Rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) method was used to clone the full length cDNA from positive differentially expressed fragments. RESULTS: Thirty-one differentially expressed fragments were found between the two groups. Three fragments were identified as the positive differentially expressed fragments by Northern blot analysis. Two full-length cDNAs were cloned by RACE method, among which one was a 1.0 kb Drosophila calmodulin (CaM), located on Chr.2; the other was a 4.1 kb gene with unknown function (No.45), located on Chr.3. CONCLUSION: The two full-length cDNAs belong to the genes that related to anesthetic action pathway, which might participate in the regulation of cellular functions and signal transduction pathways. The two genes that we found should provide a novel way to study the mechanism of inhaled anesthetic action.
